How can we know if computers write secret love songs? What if the machine is learning feelings?

Our music has always been all about emotions. Places of yearning that exist often beyond words. Where does that meaning reside?

We created these songs with music and lyrics generated by Machine Learning and AI Deep Neural Networks, collaborating with an ‘unknown other’.

With these two new songs we wanted to explore the ways that truth, beauty and ‘humanness’ interact to create something meaningful. When you remove or alter one of those elements, do the other ones still stand?

With the expressive AI generated piano, and Bastian’s effected, stream-of-consciousness vocals, the boundaries between what is human and what is machine become indistinguishable. Finding feelings in the machine, perhaps.

The piano music in Forgive Me was generated by Music Transformer, an attention-based neural network developed by Google Magenta. The lyrics were created using Rory Green’s Generative Poem Template.

Musical motifs for Distance were created using Magenta Studio with Ableton Live.
